"Won't fasting eat my muscle?" is one of the most common worries about intermittent fasting — and for most people doing short daily fasts, it is largely unfounded. The evidence suggests that muscle is well protected when protein intake is adequate and you keep training. What actually threatens muscle is not the fasting window itself, but low protein, aggressive calorie deficits, inactivity, and very long or frequent extended fasts.
The concern makes intuitive sense: if you are not eating, surely the body must break something down for fuel — and muscle is right there. It is true that the body draws on stored protein to some degree during a fast, particularly to make glucose for tissues that still need it. But the body is not careless with muscle. As a fast progresses and liver glycogen runs down, metabolism shifts increasingly toward fat and ketones, which spares protein. This adaptation is part of why humans tolerate periods without food.
The important distinction is between protein turnover — the normal, ongoing breakdown and rebuilding of muscle tissue — and net muscle loss, where breakdown outpaces rebuilding over time. A short daily fast nudges turnover but does not, on its own, drive meaningful net loss when you eat enough protein during your feeding window.
Studies of time-restricted eating (such as 16:8) combined with resistance training generally point in a reassuring direction: participants tend to lose fat while maintaining lean mass, as long as protein intake is sufficient. In other words, the fasting schedule compresses when people eat without necessarily costing them muscle. Some trials show slightly less lean-mass retention when protein falls short, which reinforces the same lesson from a different angle.
The picture changes at the extremes. During prolonged fasting — several consecutive days without food — the body does lose more lean tissue, simply because you cannot eat protein or train effectively for that long. Very low protein diets and long stretches of inactivity also erode muscle regardless of whether you fast. So the honest summary is: short daily fasting appears muscle-sparing under reasonable conditions, while the risk climbs with duration, frequency, low protein, and lack of resistance exercise.
Much of this research involves relatively small studies over weeks to a few months, and results vary with training status, age, and diet. Treat the findings as directional rather than definitive.
If muscle is your priority, the fasting window is a minor variable. Three things carry far more weight:

Notice that the fasting window sits at the bottom of that list. A person eating 2 g/kg of protein and lifting three times a week on a 16:8 schedule will almost certainly hold onto muscle better than someone eating whenever they like but skimping on protein and never training.
Because fasting compresses your eating window, hitting a solid protein target takes a little planning. Instead of grazing on protein all day, you will usually distribute it across two or three larger, protein-forward meals. Anchoring each meal around a substantial protein source — and not letting the window close before you have met your target — matters more than the exact hours you fast. Protein supplies the raw material, but resistance training is the signal that tells the body to keep muscle. In any calorie deficit — fasting or not — lifting is what preserves lean mass while fat comes off. Even two or three focused strength sessions a week make a large difference. Individual needs vary, so treat these as general guidelines.
The body does break down some protein during a fast, but it also adapts to protect muscle by shifting toward fat and ketones for fuel, especially after the first day. Short fasts cause only modest protein turnover. Substantial muscle loss is more associated with prolonged fasting, very low protein diets, and inactivity than with typical daily fasting.
Frequent or very long extended fasts carry a higher risk of losing lean tissue than short daily fasts, because you cannot eat protein or train effectively while fasting for several days. If preserving muscle is a priority, shorter daily fasts combined with resistance training and adequate protein are generally a safer approach. Training in a fasted state is not inherently harmful to muscle for most people, and many fast without problems.
